Residents in Johannesburg, specifically in Braamfontein and Hillbrow, are advised of a scheduled water interruption on 25 April, from 8:00 to 23:00.

The interruption will affect various streets, including Smith, Edith Cavell, Pietersen, Leyds, Wanderers, Bok, Twist, Biccard, Melle, Jorissen, Juta, Bertha, Simmons, De Korte, Station, Eendracht, and Yale.

Leaking 300mm steel pipe undergoes repair

The reason behind this interruption is the repair of a leaking 300mm diameter steel pipe.

During this period, customers in the affected suburbs will experience a complete cessation of water supply. However, Johannesburg Water assures residents that an alternative water supply will be provided should the need arise.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water has issued a plea to residents in the west of Johannesburg to use water judiciously. This call comes following the detection of a high rate of water consumption in areas supplied by the Doornkop North meter, encompassing Doornkop, Tshepisong, Slovoville, and Matholesville.

Johannesburg Water blames high consumption on illegal connections and leaks

SABC reported that Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, attributed the heightened consumption to illegal connections and on-property leaks, predominantly within informal settlements.

Shabalala emphasised, “The ongoing high consumption has a negative impact on other suburbs in these supply zones, including Dobsonville and Protea Glen.”

Despite ongoing interventions to mitigate strain on the system, such as regular overnight throttling of reservoirs to bolster capacity, Johannesburg Water implores residents to collaborate in water conservation efforts.

The entity underscored the importance of wise water usage in alleviating system pressure and ensuring a sustainable water supply for all residents in the long term.

Johannesburg Water urges residents to stay informed through Johannesburg Water’s communication channels for updates on the water interruption and alternative supply arrangements.
