Paarl Boys’ High overcame a shaky first-half performance to beat the home team on day two of the KES Easter Festival in Johannesburg on Saturday.

KES gave the home crowd what he wanted: a roaring performance what was almost good enough to beat one of the top teams in the country. And yet, despite their dominance and Paarl Boys’ inconsistency, the Cape schools still managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Trailing 8-0 at half-time, Boishaai liked to be well on their way to collect a shock loss against KES. But like the champion side that they are under the leadership of Sean Erasmus, the boys from Paarl got their act together and scored a converted try and a penalty to save their blushes.

It’s worth mentioning that in a class act, KES’ eighthman Kebotile Maak, played without a number on his back, in solidarity with and support of Chris Jordaan, the Paarl Boys’ No 8 who suffered a serious head injury earlier in the week and needed emergency surgery to save his life.

Elsewhere, Durbanville caused a major upset when they thrashed high-rollers Kempton Park 61-21. Durbanville scored nine tries and knocked over eight out of the nine conversion attempts.

Shaun Klein was the star of the show for Durbanville, scoring a try and getting all eight conversions for a 21-point individual haul.

In other results, Selborne outlasted Parktown in a riveting clash, Queen’s powered past Ben Vorster 32-10, Northwood hammered Hudson Park 31-13, Diamantveld schooled Nico Malan 37-21 and Eldoraigne were just too good for St David’s and climbed a 36-20 win in their fixture.
