Pieter-Steph du Toit, the standout performer throughout South Africa’s title defence in the 2023 World Cup, delivered a passionate and impromptu pep talk during the semi-final against England.

With the Springboks trailing 12-6 at half-time, Du Toit’s words became a pivotal moment in the campaign.

Du Toit’s Concern About Being a Role Model

Captured by Chasing the Sun 2 cameras, Du Toit’s speech reflected his concern about being a role model for children in South Africa.

He appreciated Rassie Erasmus recognising the importance of his intervention, despite initially feeling apprehensive about the inclusion of his speech in the documentary.

The Unexpected Situation in the Changeroom

Du Toit described the unusual atmosphere in the changeroom, with coaches standing behind a table and players sitting in silence.

He emphasised the need for the team to come together, create energy, and focus on the next job, as per their motto.

Du Toit’s Call for Unity and Readiness to Fight

Standing up amidst the silence, Du Toit urged his teammates to decide if they were scared or ready to fight, emphasising the need for unity.

“We’ve got to make plans, that’s what we normally do. We make a plan and discuss what’s going on,” he said.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Despite being someone who typically lets his actions speak louder than words, Du Toit felt compelled to address the team.

“I’m a strong believer in ‘actions speak louder than words’. The way you perform on the field or the way you live your life must tell your story,” he explained.

Du Toit’s Impressive Performance in the Final

Du Toit’s words clearly had an impact, as he went on to produce arguably his most impressive performance in a Springbok jersey against the All Blacks in the final.

He made an astonishing 28 tackles, contributing to his overall tournament output of 66 tackles, 94 run metres, 18 carries, three clean breaks, and a try.

Erasmus’s Recognition of Du Toit’s Leadership

The day after the semi-final, Rassie Erasmus showed the footage of Du Toit’s speech to the team, acknowledging his understanding of the situation.

“Rassie of course, the next day, we had a meeting. And he just showed it on the projector and he said, ‘This guy understands’. And I’m very grateful for that,” Du Toit shared.

His words, combined with his outstanding performance in the final, played a crucial role in the Springboks’ successful title defence.
