What is Springbok icon Fourie du Preez doing these days?

Widely regarded as one of the best scrumhalves ever to play the game, Fourie du Preez’s impact on South African and Springbok rugby should never be taken for granted.

Born in Pretoria in 1982, his talent shone through early, leading him to represent South Africa at the Under-19 and Under-21 Junior World Championships, even captaining the latter to victory in the inaugural tournament in 2002.

Du Preez’s professional journey began with the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup before quickly establishing himself as a Super Rugby mainstay.

His debut in 2003 marked the start of a dominant decade for both player and team. He became a regular starter, renowned for his exceptional speed at the ruck, pinpoint passing, and tactical nous. This dominance translated to the international stage as Du Preez earned his first Springbok cap in 2004, the same year South Africa secured the Tri-Nations title.

The pinnacle of his career arrived in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Du Preez’s playmaking skills were instrumental in the Springboks’ historic victory. He continued to excel, winning another Tri-Nations title in 2009 and earning two nominations for IRB Player of the Year. Throughout his international career, which spanned until 2015, he amassed 76 caps and 16 tries, solidifying his place as a Springbok legend.

Du Preez’s club career mirrored his international success. He was a key figure in the Bulls’ three Super Rugby titles (2007, 2009, 2010) and remains one of their most decorated players. The skilful playmaker also formed part of three Currie Cup-winning squads.

In 2011, he took his talents to Japan, playing for Suntory Sungoliath until his retirement in 2016. During his time overseas, he won three titles with Suntory.

The 42-year-old remains involved with Fledge Capital, a private equity firm in Pretoria.

“I thought I’d just go there for three months and see how it goes, but I’ve been there ever since,” he shared during an interview on the Use it or Lose it Show. “It was a fantastic learning experience, seeing how different deals are done, and how proper professionals do it.”

On the company’s official website, his role is described as follows: “Fourie joined Fledge Capital on a full-time basis in 2016. During this period, Fourie has actively secured a number of transactions and potential transactions for Fledge Capital through his well-diversified network. He is actively involved in assisting Fledge Capital’s investments with growth opportunities and represents Fledge Capital on the board of ITNA/Munsoft.”

Over the last few years, Du Preez has also served as a part-time coaching consultant with the Bulls, having based himself in Pretoria with his family.

“You can see the impact Fourie du Preez has in helping the scrumhalves,” Bulls coach Jake White explained upon roping in the services of Du Preez.

“The confidence they gain when you get a guy like him to come in and help them with their technical stuff and the understanding of the game.

“They are getting a feel for what their roles are. You can never underestimate what sort of knowledge or intellectual property they are getting from a guy like Fourie du Preez.”

Du Preez is also an avid golfer, boasting a handicap not far off scratch.
