Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane is a man of many talents and he’s proven it in the first season of The Musked Singer South Africa which aired last year. But not many people know that the former Democratic Alliance president has impressive football skills too.
It’s election season in South Africa and many politicians are out and about visiting ordinary citizens to listen to their grievances. South Africans will cast their vote on 29 May 2024 – and while one can vote for a political party, there is also the option of voting for an individual.
MMUSI MAIMANE PLAYS FOOTBALL IN SOWETO
A video shared by Maimane, while campaigning on the streets of Soweto, has impressed many on social media platform X.
The clip sees the 43-year-old politician showing off his football skills along with his BOSA party members and the children on the street. Maimane goes from juggling the soccer ball a couple of times to chesting it, and juggling again.
According to Soccer Laduma, Maimane spent most of his time playing football on the streets of Dobsonville in Soweto (where he grew up) before joining Ontario Football Club. However, he never made it to the professional league.
He is also a staunch Kaizer Chiefs and Liverpool supporter.
TAKING A JAB AT JULIUS MALEMA’S BREAD BLUNDER
Maimane also quoted his video with a jab directed at Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema following his interview with Lester Kiewit on Cape Talk on Monday, 25 March.
Malema was found wanting during the interview when he said he did not know how much a loaf of bread costs in SA.
“I would not know how much the price of a loaf of bread is because I am not in a position where I have to go and buy a loaf of bread,” he said.
His comment went from bad to worse when he suggested that value added tax (VAT) should be removed from basic foods, such as bread. However, that is already the case in the country as there is no VAT charge on bread.
“Bread and all of the staple foods – VAT must be removed from that and the government must ensure that those staple foods are accessible to our people,” he said.
Responding to Malema, Maimane wrote: “When you are comfortable on the streets and interact with the people you will know the price of bread.”
